Elocution Simplified: or How to Read and Speak Correctly & Effectively...

Elocution Simplified: or How to Read and Speak Correctly & Effectively by J.C. Kyger was originally published in 1864! Exactly the type of old book I love to discover. Originally published in the mid 19th century, the information included here is timeless.  In our day and age of slang and sloppiness, reading Elocution Simplified was a fascinating glimpse into another time.  It if also filled with great tips – some of which I’ve never heard before. And truly, many current how to books on elocution were clearly “inspired” by this book.  You will learn (via text and exercises) all about Breathing, Articulation, Inflection, Cadence, Emphasis, Gesticulation, What to Do With Your Hands!! and much much more. From the introduction: “Let it not be said that Elocution is only the tinsel of Eloquence. Demosthenes justly...

Civil War Household Tips

Sep 6, 2014 by

Every once in a while, in everyone’s life, there comes a time for a strange remedy. You know what I mean – an out-of-the-box answer to a question you find yourself pondering for days. Modern medicine just doesn’t seem to be fixing it – so what do you do? This, my friends, just might be the book to answer all your questions. Imagine…it’s the mid 19th century, 1860’s to be precise. Please keep in mind penicillin was not discovered by Alexander Fleming until 1928.  We take it all for granted now don’t we? we take for granted…small infections that disappear as soon as the doctor prescribes antibiotic cream, or perhaps you have some… shall we say “un-named” infection that is causing a blip in your regular day. You simply run to the doctor or...

Popular Superstitions and the Truths Contained Within...

Nov 14, 2013 by

Popular Superstitions and the Truths Contained Within by Dr. Herbert Mayo is a collection of letters written first  in 1846 and then published in 1852. From his prefatory remarks: “In the following Letters I have endeavoured to exhibit in their true light the singular natural phenomena of which old superstition and modern charlatanism in turn availed themselves — to indicate their laws, and to develope their theory. The subject is so important that I might well have approached it in a severer guise. But, slight as this performance may appear, I profess to have employed upon it the keenest and most patient efforts of reflection of which I am capable. And as to its tone at the commencement, and the prominence given to popular and trivial topics, I candidly avow that, without some such...

Self Mastery

Nov 8, 2013 by

Self Mastery by Jesse Ross Deamude was originally published in 1922 provides to quote the author “the fundamental truths for those who seek health, inspiration, happiness and success.” A few paragraphs from the introduction: “Self Mastery, expressed in other terms, or at least its philosophy, is at once the most ancient as well as the most modern philosophy. King Solomon is accredited with saying that, ‘There is nothing new under the sun.’ Whether he was or was not the first to express that thought, it, nevertheless is true. All things which exist today, always existed potentially. The great truths presented in the Philosophy of Self Mastery are as old as time itself; but as little known to the most of humanity as the nature of life at the bottom of the sea. Yet the...

Thinking in the Heart OR Easy Lessons in Realization...

Nov 5, 2013 by

Thinking in the Heart OR Easy Lessons in Realization by Kate Atkinson Boehme was originally published in 1902 and is an  important book for those interested in the early New thought Movement. Here are a few paragraphs from early in the book to give you a feel for her style and content: “To enter into Realization it is necessary to get away from the comparatively meaningless action which constitutes the greater part of our thinking. There is nothing to realize but Truth, and all thinking which does not move toward the knowledge of Truth is desultory, vague, purposeless, unreal and useless. You, the master workman, must learn how to use the thought machine. You must also learn how to let it rest, for you are not at the mercy of your thoughts, except as...

The Mastery of Destiny

Oct 28, 2013 by

The Mastery of Destiny by James Allen was first published in 1909 and is a classic in the genre of self help books.  This is an exact duplication from an original copy from 1909.  The upside of that is seeing the words and print exactly as they were published over one hundred years ago (without any of the potential current editing or additions that can occur in “new” versions).  The small downside is you have to deal with the not perfect quality, but that’s a small price to pay I think for seeing the book in the exact form of the original publication. Here are a few paragraphs from the beginning of the book: “DEEDS, CHARACTER, AND DESTINY There is, and always has been, a wide-spread belief in Fate, or Destiny, that is, in...

Christ as a Physician

Oct 26, 2013 by

Christ as a Physician by James C. Jackson M.D. is a fascinating book originally published in 1882. A few lines from the book: “BODILY DISEASES SPIRITUAL HINDRANCES. Now the forms of ailment which a human body can take on, and which, where any one or more of them exists, can and do make it a poor instrument for the manifestation of the graces of the Holy Spirit, are many. Numerous as they are, so numerous may be the spiritual hindrances. This is not a pretty picture to present, but better in this instance to paint a daub and have it true, than to cover the canvas of human life with the tints of Raphael and have it all untrue; kind the truth is, our infirmities, however existing, are obstacles to the growth of the...

How Life Really Works: The Answer To Finding Your Purpose & Personal Fulfillment...

Sep 20, 2013 by

I just discovered How Life Really Works and read it in one sitting and am now going back through it doing the exercises and realizing what a gold mine it is!  Anyone who reads my blog knows I love self help books, and this is one of the best I’ve read in a very long time. Kimberly Ann Brown was not born into a life with a silver spoon, and in fact had to overcome many personal hurdles. She is extremely authentic about her own struggles and I appreciated reading her real life road to personal happiness and fulfillment. This book is a template for re-writing your own destiny. Why is your life the way that it is? What reasons do people use to explain their reality? The One and Only reason WHY your...

An Introduction to Phrenology

Jun 17, 2013 by

AN INTRODUCTION TO PHRENOLOGY by Robert MacNish  was first published waaaaaay back in 1837. A few words from his foreword to give you a feel for this fascinating old text about phrenology, the pseudoscience of focusing on the bumps and measurements of the human skull to give information on the person’s character and personality… “My first ideas of Phrenology were obtained from Dr. Gall himself, its founder, whose lectures I attended in Paris during the year 1825. Before that time 1, in common with almost all who are ignorant of the subject, spoke of it with great contempt, and took every opportunity of turning it into ridicule. The discourses of this great man, and several private conversations which I had the honour of holding with him, produced a total change in my ideas, and...

LETTERS ON OCCULT MEDITATION Received and Edited by Alice Bailey was first published in 1922.  This is an interesting book as Alice thanks the “Tibetan teacher who wrote these letters and authorized their publication.” Here is the foreword to Alice’s book: “FOREWORD The following letters were received during the period included within the dates, May 16th, 1920, and October 20th, 1920, with the exception of the three letters which were received in 1919. With the consent of their author they have been gathered together for publication. They are published in full as received, with the exception of certain parts which have a purely personal application, those having reference to a certain occult school, and those of a prophetic or esoteric nature, which may not now be communicated. It is hoped that those who read...

Our Master’s Voice: Advertising...

Apr 17, 2013 by

Our Master’s Voice: Advertising by James Rorty is very hard to find and previously completely out of print. This is a reproduction taken off of an original copy of the book.  I love these because I don’t want a new version of old books – I really want to see the exact text and pages from the old book.  Purists can bitch and moan that it is scanned, but at we are seeing the book EXACTLY as it was printed many years ago.  I think that is special and wonderful. This is truly a wild little book about the power of advertising, I think you might enjoy it. PREFACE “Two basic definitions will perhaps assist the reader to understand the scope and intent of this book. The advertising business is taken to mean the...
